Rudolf Hilferding's *Finance Capital*, published in 1910, remains a seminal work in understanding the evolution of capitalism in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It offered a sophisticated analysis of the growing concentration of economic power in the hands of banks and large industrial enterprises, a phenomenon he termed "finance capital." This analysis heavily influenced later Marxist thought, particularly Lenin's theory of imperialism.

Hilferding argued that the traditional, competitive capitalism described by Marx was transforming into a more organized and monopolistic system. This transformation was driven by the increasing interdependence between banks and industrial corporations. Banks, initially providers of credit, evolved into active participants in industrial management and ownership. They did this through extending loans, underwriting stock offerings, and directly investing in companies. This process led to a concentration of ownership and control within a relatively small number of powerful financial institutions.

A key concept in Hilferding's work is that of the "promoter's profit." He describes how banks would create new corporations, inflate their value through stock offerings, and then profit handsomely by selling the shares to the public. This created incentives for banks to continuously expand industrial capacity, often beyond the actual needs of the market. This, in turn, led to overproduction and economic instability.

Another crucial aspect of finance capital, according to Hilferding, was its inherently expansionist nature. Domestically, it sought to eliminate competition through cartels, trusts, and other forms of monopolistic organization. Internationally, it sought to expand into new markets and sources of raw materials through colonialism and imperialism. The drive for profit and control led finance capital to seek global dominance, ultimately contributing to increased international tensions and conflicts.

Hilferding's analysis highlights how finance capital created a new class structure, with a powerful financial elite at the top. This elite controlled not only the economy but also exerted significant influence over the political system. He suggested that this financial oligarchy used its power to shape government policies to further its own interests, often at the expense of the working class and the broader population.

While some of Hilferding's specific predictions about the future of capitalism have not come to pass, his analysis of the concentration of economic power, the role of finance in driving capitalist expansion, and the increasing interconnection between the economy and the political sphere remain relevant today. His work provides a valuable framework for understanding the dynamics of modern capitalism and its impact on society.
